Always Sold Out! Let’s Meet the Infamous Croffle.

If last year dalgona was the food trend in Indonesia during the pandemic, this year one of the trending foods in the country where dalgona came from, also became the spotlight in Indonesia. You probably see this food around a lot on Instagram story from influencers, or your own friends. Yup! Croffle!

What’s Croffle?

It’s a hybrid between the famed French pastry, croissant, and world’s beloved breakfast menu, waffle. This isn’t the first time a hybrid food creation involving croissant became a buzz. Some years ago, the cronut, a cross combination of croissant and donut also got hyped up everywhere.

At first glance, it does look like your typical waffle. What differentiates it with the typical waffle is how it uses croissant’s unique dough and then it’s baked in a waffle iron which creates a dessert with one-of-a-kind texture.

Croffle’s Origin.

While croffle went viral in Indonesia because it’s dubbed as a Korean street food, it actually originates from Ireland! In 2017, a chef named Louise Lennox introduced this unique treat.

Although it has existed for a few years, croffle only became known in Indonesia on the year of 2021, probably because we tend to follow Korea’s food trend. Like dalgona coffee, garlic cheese bread, and sweet potato bread that were booming in 2020.

What distinguishes chef Lennox’s croffle with Korea’s version of croffle is the use of sugar sprinkled on top of the croissant dough before being put on the waffle iron, a crucial step in making a Korean croffle.

Ways to Enjoy Croffle.

Croffle is a treat which can be enjoyed in many ways, the savoury taste from the buttery croissant dough combined with the caramelization from the sugar makes the croffle edible just as it is. Though many cafes also provide additional toppings such as chocolate jam, fruit jam, and almonds to enjoy with croffles. In addition, it can also be enjoyed with a warm cup of coffee.
